Brett doesn't get a lot of time off of work and our bank account isn't busting at the seams, so a short trip suited us perfectly. I really wanted to find us a place to stay that was on or near the beach, but it's the height to of the travel season in Cape Cod and hotel rooms are at a premium.
We ended up finding an inn at Yarmouthport on the north side of Cape Cod. It was a cute place, and it was perfect for young travelers on a budget. We had a little room in the carriage house. Everything in that area of the country is pretty mildew-y, so it took a while to get used to the smell. It was like staying in the cabin at the Suppinger lake house, but with nicer accommodations! Plus, our breakfast and dinner was included in the price of the room. That was actually really helpful, since we were back at the inn by 6 or so in the evening so that Sophia could crawl around in the evenings.
Near the inn where we stayed, we walked to see this Weeping Beech tree, which is apparently the largest of its kind in the world. It looked normal from the outside, but we went under the branches, and boy, that was something else. There are pictures below. The thing was huge.
We took Sophia into the pool at the inn, and she LOVED it. We definitely have a baby that likes water. I wish we could have taken pictures while she was in the pool, but we forgot the camera when we went.
The next day, we spent the morning and ate lunch in Hyannis, which was just south of Yarmouthport. We ended up spending the rest of the afternoon on the beach. It was a perfect day with just a little breeze and lots of warm sunshine. We all changed into our bathing suits and took a dunk in the water. I think Sophia thought the ocean was just a big bath tub. She loved it! She walked right into the water without hesitating and plopped down on the shoreline. We had to keep her from eating the sand and shells, but other than that, she loved it! We spent a good three hours there on the beach. It was a well-needed break for all of us.
The next day, we checked out of the inn and decided to drive to Woods Hole to walk around and go to the aquarium. I guess everyone else had the same idea, because the place was buzzing and traffic was bumper to bumper. We couldn't find a parking space anywhere, so we decided to just go back to Falmouth, which is just to the northeast. We walked around downtown, ate at a little diner, and played in the grass at the park. After that, we headed home, and everyone slept REALLY well that night. It was a nice first official family vacation!
